Fantastic hotel in the centre of Funchal, a 10 minute walk from the main Square. Although in the main area, it's quite quiet as in front of the hotel, there is the Scots Kirk and gardens and to the side the local park. There are no really steep hills from the main area to the hotel. The rooms aren't the largest we have been in, but are more than big enough for your stay. The rooms were cleaned every day, as was the rest of the hotel. There are lifts to every floor, including the rooftop bar. The breakfast every morning was very nice. The rooftop bar has nice views and a swimming pool. Our room No.316 faced South, so we got the sun most of the day. The staff were polite and friendly.
Nice hotel in a great position, clean and friendly with a good breakfast. What more could you want for a short stay in such a great place. Good night sleep with no noise as we are at the back of the hotel if we were on a higher floor we would have views of the mountains.
Really loved our stay here. Staff were always friendly and helpful. The pool bar staff did a brilliant job. Only ever saw one member of staff and they coped really efficiently doing everything (bar, food and clearing tables). The hotel is in an excellent position. Only a short distance from shops and some really nice restaurants. Would highly recommend this little gem of a hotel and would definitely like to come and stay again.
Very good 3* hotel, perfect location in the old town. Very friendly personnel, where you can even book your island trips. Only 10 meters from the beautiful Jardim Municipal where you have a nice bar/ lunch place.
Well our experience here was both amazing and horrible at the same time.
We ended up arriving late due to flight cancellations, and faced a significant problem when we found out upon reaching at the hotel that it requires a key card to enter. Since apparently we reached very late around 3 in the morning, we were stranded outside with no one at the desk. Despite our attempts to contact the hotel, no one picked up. We just stood out all alone until a departing guest let us in. It was a very frustrating start, compounded by the fact that there was no mention of after-hours access issues during booking or on the website. So we ended up waiting till 7 when the staff was back to let us check in.
Setting aside this initial hiccup, the hotel is at a prime location, reasonable pricing, and complimentary breakfast - which makes it stand out. Its selling point is the convenient location, with most attractions within walking distance. The breakfast was good enough. The room was okay, although lacking a view.
The hotel has a rooftop which had an exceptional view of the mountains and houses, creating a serene atmosphere. Had a pool, lounge chairs and tables as well.
So I would say it is a great choice for its location, which is what you need the most. However, a cautionary note – be wary of late arrivals to avoid the inconvenience we faced.
This hotel has one massive selling point, it's location in Funchal centre is perfect for pretty much everything. You can walk easily to the marina or central shopping area, many bus routes pass close by and there are loads of restaurants in the vicinity. You've also got a small but pleasant municipal garden right next to the hotel with a decent bar cum cafe. There was a variety of free events in this park during our stay which were interesting but didn't go on late into the night to cause any disturbance. That said, the park can be a little intimidating when it's dark and quiet. The hotel has a roof terrace with a small shallow pool and a few loungers and tables and chairs. There's also a bar which sells snacks. We didn't eat there but the beer was fine and the prices normal. The cocktails were cheap and tasteless, I wouldn't bother if I was you. Staff were fine, some friendlier than others. As to the rooms, they are basic. It's 3 star but I'd pitch it on a par with a Travel Lodge. We had a superior room without a balcony which was a fair size. Beds were OK. The bathroom wasn't great, walk in shower, bidet which we didn't use, nothing particularly wrong but just a bit down market, smallish towels etc. Cleanliness wasn't great, I try not to look too closely but some areas are in need of a refurb and deep clean. Breakfast room often seemed overrun with staff unable to clear tables fast enough or replenish supplies. The coffee was from a machine but was actually really nice. Unfortunately the hot food was poor, scrambled egg each day and a rotating choice of small sausages or something that looked a bit like bacon but was utterly horrible. The same two types of buns were offered each day with jam, some inoffensive little pastry things. It was better than nothing but only just and after a week was mind numbingly boring in its repetition.
On a more positive note the reception staff were good and a special shout out to Luis who is a fantastic character. Massive personality and hugely welcoming and helpful.
Overall the Madeira Hotel is adequate, nothing special at all but in a fabulous location.
Absolutely loved our stay at this hotel! The staff were super friendly and helpful. The room/hotel itself was very clean and spacious. The hotel is located at walking distance from most attractions and even has a bonus rooftop terrace which …
The hotel is very clean and extremely good located.
We had a problem with our room:
The A/C was not working. We asked the reception staff for help and they changed …
